He was for several years head of the Hollywood division of the Communist Party USA. He was also the organization's cultural manager and answered directly to V.J. Jerome, the Party's New York-based cultural chief. He was the first president of the Writers Guild of America, West after the Screen Writers Guild divided into two regional organizations": B.

60pp., 12mo. Disbound and without wraps. In fair condition, lightly aged and worn. Businesslike alphabetical catalogue of unnumbered priced general items, in double column. Short notes at the beginning and end, the former boasting that books will be sold 'aux prix de Paris', the latter offering for sale a 'nouvelle et très-belle édition' of Plato by Firmin Didot. The author was presumably Jacques-Christophe Frère, father of Édouard Frère (1797-1874), archivist, biographer, and historian specialized in the Normandy area. No copy in the Bibliotheque Nationale, nor on OCLC WorldCat or COPAC.

48pp., 12mo. Disbound pamphlet without wraps. In fair condition, lightly aged and worn, with slight staining to outer leaves. A guide to health for the common people, with remedies. Written in Welsh, with a scattering of words in English. Williams is described on the title-page as 'Awdwr Y “Salmydd Cenhedlaethol,” “Ceinion Cerddoriarth Gorawl Ac Eglwysig,” “Hymnau Nadolig,” &c., &c. Two-page 'Rhagymadrodd' by 'Hafrenydd.

Title-page reads, in full: 'A Short Account of the Cause of the Disease in Corn, Called by Farmers The Blight, the Mildew, and the Rust. By Sir Joseph Banks, Bart. Third Edition, with Additions: | And | A Letter to Sir J. Banks, On the Origin of the Blight, and on the Means of Raising Late Crops of Garden Pease. By T. A. Knight, Esq. | 1815.' [19]pp., 8vo. 56pp., 12mo. Disbound pamphlet without wraps. In fair condition, lightly aged and worn. A series of seventeen letters, written from Jerusalem in 1865. The author was the daughter of Owen Jones, and these letters are edited with a preface by Owen Jones. The book went to at least seven editions. No copy of this first edition at the National Library of Wales, and no other copy on COPAC either. Now scarce.

31 + [1]pp., 8vo. Stapled without wraps. Drophead title. (Offprint from Transactions of the Medico-Legal Society.) In fair condition, lightly aged, central vertical fold, rusted staples. 'No reasonable person', Riddell writes, 'suggests the wholesale sterilisation of masses of lunatics and defectives. Only very moderate measures are proposed.' Riddell's suggestion is that 'in suitable cases, subject to the consent of the Board of Control, or some similar body', and with the consent of the subject, lunatics and mental defectives be sterilised.

A collection of carols for 'Plygain' services at Christmas, plus memorial 'Englynion' by Breece, who was also a local preacher with the Wesleyans. 36pp., 12mo. Disbound pamphlet without wraps. In fair condition, lightly aged and worn. Beneath the 'Rhagymadrodd' in Welsh by 'E. B. | Llangadfan, | Hydref 28ain, 1846.' is the following note in English: 'The author of this little book of Welsh POEMS begs to return his sincere thanks to his esteemed Friends, who afforded him their kind assistance to publish his humble Compositions.' Two-page table of contents at rear.

Two items bound together. 40pp., 8vo, and [2] + 31pp., 8vo. Stapled into black printed wraps, with title in white on cover: 'Two Talks to the Nurses of the London Hospital, Dec. 1897, Dec. 1905.' The first talk (1897) is titled: 'A Talk to the Nurses of the London Hospital'. Holland states: 'I am proud, Nurses, of being at the head of what I believe to be one of the best nursed hospitals in England, and it is an added joy to me to be associated in the work with a woman whose life's work it has been to perfect hospital nursing, [i.e.

Contains one full-page engraving: 'Testimonial Presentation to Mme. Camilla Urso in the Town Hall, Melbourne.' Cheaply printed on browned high-acidity paper, in aged and worn wraps. The wraps are attractively designed, with the violinist's name printed in large decorative type diagonally across the centre of the front cover. The back cover gives details of Urso's 'Transcontinental Tour.

Pp.3-6 carry the 'Friendly Hints to the Teachers of the Christ-Church Sunday-School, Bradford.', signed in type at the end 'W. Morgan' and addressed to 'My dear Fellow-Labourers'. Pp.7-8 carry the ten 'Rules for the Teachers of the Christ-Church Sunday-School, Bradford, Agreed upon at their Monthly Meeting, Sep. 28th., 1828.' No other copy traced, either on OCLC WorldCat or on COPAC.

13pp., 8vo. Stapled. In fair condition, lightly aged, with slight rust to staples. Consisting of a title leaf and 9pp. of text in small print, paginated [2] 3-11. The author is not named, and no other copy of the title has been traced, either on OCLC WorldCat or on COPAC, but the item comes from a collection of papers by Stanley - and Africa is his specailist subject.

Laid out in double column in the manner of a newspaper article, with drophead title, and a photographic portrait of Stanley taking up most of the first page. A seven-page endorsement of Stanley is followed by nine pages of positive extracts and quotations concerning him, beginning with 'The Finding of Dr. Livingstone. | Message of the Queen to Mr. H. M. Stanley' and 'Dr.

The thirteen Capricornus items on COPAC indicate that the press was connected with K. M. Briggs, or at least with her family, who had moved to Perthshire with their father in 1911. Uncommon. Copac lists sets of the three volumes in the series at the British Library, National Library of Scotland and Oxford, and a single copy of this number at the National Library of Wales.

16pp., 8vo. In fair condition, lightly aged and worn. Stitched with green ribbon into paper wraps, with the title in manuscript on the front cover and the name 'J. Dias'. A conventional and moralistic treatment, the author's view being that 'Education ought to be at once moral, intellectual, aesthetical, religious, and social'. Quotations from 'Bulwer', Southwood Smith, Godwin, 'Dr. Combe', 'Bishop Beveridge'. No other copy traced, either on OCLC WorldCat or on COPAC. The British Library has copies of the eighth and twelfth editions, and University College London has a copy dated 1853.

16pp., 8vo. Stapled pamphlet. Aged and worn, with all text intact. Dedicated 'To | Nathaniel Lewis Cohen, Esq., | Founder of the First | Free Labour Registry | in England.' The text begins: 'A National Labour Bureau, with Affiliated Labour Registries, | Is one of the pressing needs of the time.

26 + [2] pp., 12mo. The title-page has at its head: 'The End of the Good Man – Peace.', and carries a quotation from Blair's 'Grave'. The sermon is preceded by a six-page preface by 'J. EVANS', dated from 'Islington, Feb. 11, 1812.', incorporating Smeaton's obituary from the Monthly Repository, December 1811. Following the eighteen pages of the sermon are two pages of advertisements for books by Evans and Kingsford. Stitched and unbound. In good condition, lightly aged, with slight spotting to title-leaf.

37pp., 8vo. Stitched and unbound. In fair condition, on aged and worn paper with spotting to front cover. In manuscript (Ward's hand?) at head of title-page: 'Thomas Gladstone Esq | MP | 6/A/Albany'.

15pp., 8vo. Stitched and unbound. In good condition, lightly aged, with central vertical fold. In small print. In the conclusion of the speech - 'greeted with repeated rounds of applause' - he states that he 'cannot be a party to severing that Church and State under which it is the glory and the privilege of the state to uphold the light of the Reformation in the midst of Ireland'. Scarce: only two copies on OCLC WorldCat, at the British Library and Illinois, and no copy at the National Library of Ireland.

The full title reads: 'The Speech of the Lord Chancellor delivered in the House of Lords, June 29th, 1868, on the Motion for the Second Reading of a Bill, intituled An Act to prevent, for a limited Time, new Appointments in the Church of Ireland, and to restrain, for the same Period, in certain respects, the Proceedings of the Ecclesiastical Commissioners for Ireland.' 47 + [1]pp., 8vo. Stitched and unbound. In good condition, lightly aged and worn, with central vertical fold. The final page carries a list of 'Publications issued by the National Protestant Union'.

Pamphlet, 58pp. 8vo, original printed wraps, with crude reinforcement of spine. wraps chipped, and partially stained, minor staining and foxing in contents. Front wrap inscribed "J. Bartlett, M.D." John Bartlett of "Quotations" fame married into the Willard clan but, although the signature resembles his, I've found no evidence for the M.D. THe volume concerns a Civil War soldier who perished in the Fredericksburg campaign.

2pp., 8vo. Handbill with drophead title. In fair condition, lightly-aged, unbound, with slight loss to one corner (not affecting text). Inscribed at head of first page: 'Lord Houghton | de la part d'Arlès-Dufour'. Lord Houghton is better known as Richard Monckton Milnes (1809-1885); Jean Barthelemy Arlès Dufour (Barthelemy Francois Arlès Dufour) (1797-1872) was a leading Lyons silk manufacturer.

Total 79pp., cr. 8vo, orig. printed wraps, chipping, rust on staples, wear to spine, corners turned, contents good. A few pencil notes (not relevant to Carroll). The consignee of the Lewis Carroll collection, S.H. Williams [Sidney Herbert Williams] was the co-author of "A Handbook of the Literature of the Reverend C.L. Dodgson, (Lewis Carroll)" with Falconer Madan.

24pp., 12mo. Paginated 1-24. Disbound printed item. In fair condition, on aged and spotted paper. Drophead title, followed by: 'This Catalogue consists of three parts. In the first part is given a list of our early printed books in chronological order; in the second, a typographical index, showing at what presses the works were produced; in the third, an alphabetical index of the authors' names.' Originally published in the first issue of the Downside Review, July 1880, pp.72-90. This offprint is scarce: the only copy on OCLC WorldCat at Cambridge, whose catalogue dates it to 1880.
