Autograph Letters

Forel’s work on ants was praised by Charles Darwin. Such is his standing that his image appeared on the 1000 Swiss franc banknote between 1878 and 2000. 4pp, 12mo; bifolium. Lightly aged, worn at foot (with slight affect on signature); folded twice. 73 lines of text, in an untidy hand. Entirely in French, apart from the following towards the end, suggesting an English-speaking recipient: ‘Merry Christmas and New Year!’ Excellent content. The recipient appears to be a British naturalist to whom he promised a magazine piece on a recent visit.

Three pages, 8vo, large handwriting, staining along fold marks, small closed tear at centre, text legible. Your welcome telegram to Dr [Renton?] here has been with much pleasure received by His Highness the Maha Rajah of Mysore.- In reply I am directed by His Highness the Maha Rajah, to ascquaint you that a letter from Dr Campbell, intimating all about your good self, has been received by the last Mail - Now the Maha Rajah most anxiously looks forward to have an interview with you & Dr Campbell.

A. 22 Nov. 1905, Three pages, 12mo, bifolium,black-bordered, good condition. He refers to an account sent to him by a correspondent of Car which I read with great interest but he had yet to receive a detailed account. I quite understand in Surrey motorists must be a great nuisance to many of the inhabitants, and therefore was quite prepared for the Council passing a resolution-which in itself is I think impracticable.

Two pages 8vo, bifolium, blank second leaf laid down on former album page, 22 x 14cm, good condition. Text: The last time I saw you I spoke to you about the necessity of translating and printing in russian [sic] 'Barclay's Apology'. I think that the sooner it will be printed the better, and ought to be printed in russian without any abriviations [sic]. But I have not the means of paying the translation and printing. | Do you think the Society of Friends would give the necessary money for the translation and printing?

Two pages, sm. folio, good condition. Text; "As I said to you the other day at the Ackermans, I do not think that 'The Economist's' figures contradict what we said in Spain. [...]" He goes on to compare taxes per capita in the States and UK, giving figures for total tax, population, and tax per person (about $100 les per person in the UK). He continues, "I agree however that per capita figures are by no means the only criterion because of the great national income per person in the United States[...]" He then quotes 'The Economist' giving percentages of the tax burden.

Note: Huddersfield became the first English club to win three successive English league titles in 1925–26. Text: To be convicted for a term at hard labor - viz:- attending to one's correspondence - Terrible! | My intentions are of the best but unfortunately the letters remain unanswered - | So I hope now to be pardoned and remain | Yours very truly [...].

Six pages, 12mo, good condition. He finds it difficult to give advice because of his being so imperfectly informed as to the present state of the question of immigration into Guiana.

Half a 12mo page, fold mark, good condition. I have the Honor to transmit to your Lordship this Letter which I have received from two of the officers commanding Troops of Yeomanry in the County of Oxford. See image. These letters are NOT present.

Twelve (12) pages, 12mo (3 x bifoliums), good condition. She starts by saying that perpetual illness and being tired of Bristol first drives her to write to her. From then on she concentrates on Elroy Flecker to a correspondent who must be equally an enthusiast and with whom she shares private information. Yes, I wish I had known in time that you & I could have gone to Hassan [underlined]. I would not have missed it with you. I am half afraid I cannot elucidate the West Gate.

Seven ALSs, one TLS, 18 pages, 12mo, very good condition. [1. 8 July 1960] arranging lunch in a restaurant where they'll be able to talk; [2. 13 July 1960] He thanks her for the valuable & interesting information about Stanley yesterday. Your talk gave me a greater insight into his character than I had before. She amplified what Spencer's writings had revealed, etc.

AUTOGRAPH MANUSCRIPT PRINTING HISTORY TYPOGRAPHY THE TIMES.

See his entry in the Oxford DNB. The present item dates from 1807, the year in which Bathurst sold the celebrated Apsley House ('No. 1 London') to the Duke of Wellington's brother the Marquis Wellesley, who sold it on to the Duke ten years later. It is now the Wellington Museum. This item casts an interesting light on the initial sale. 2pp, 4to. Thirty-four lines of text. In good condition, lightly aged. Folded four times. He is disappointed that the unnamed male recipient (presumably Wellesley's agent) has not called on him.

For information on Graves see the generous obituary of him in The Times, 18 April 1944. Both items in fair condition, lightly aged and worn, with minor staining from paperclip to first leaf of letter. The work was not published, and although Graves states in Item One that the greater part of the text is 'in the hands of my typist', there is no record of its survival, or of the thousand related documents he states were sent to him by M. H. Spielmann. ONE: ALS from 'C L. G.' to 'Dear Evoe'. 4pp., landscape 8vo.
