Folded in customary fashion, with 'Brief | for the opinion of Mr Harington' on the outside of the packet, beneath which, in another hand: 'Feby 14th. 1890 | Richard Harington Esq'. The author's hand is clearly disguised, as is usual with valentines, the writing being markedly ornate. There are various crude drawings in the margins, ranging from images of a barrister and a woman, faces of two women (one smoking a pipe), to small representations of cigar boxes, briefs and books.

Three pages, 12mo, large handwriting somewhat difficult to read, bifolium, black border, some damage, remnants of laying down in album, and foxing without obscuring text. She will get her gardener to send a plant (she gives technical name), thanking him for photographs of "the nurse with the two little patients [...] a very pretty picture.2

Printed item, c.35 x 10cm, fold mark, some faint marking, mainly good condition. It commences, "Messrs Dowdeswell request the honour of your company at a PRIVATE VIEW. [...] of the Works by Members of 'La Societe des Impressionistes' (Examples by Degas, Monet, Renoir, Sisley, Pissaro [sic] Boudin; Mesdames Morizot, Cassatt, &c) [...]". Also on display, they announce, is a picture (of Henry Irving anothers) by Johnston Forbes-Robertson, better known as a Shakespearian actor. Concludes "ADMIT TWO".

Folio, 27 pp. Unbound and stapled. Ownership signature ('Cross') of S. T. Cross, of the Registry of the International Court of Justice in the Hague. Good, on lightly-aged paper, with closed tear at head of first leaf, and indentation from paperclip. Sections on child welfare, the traffic in women, licensed houses, women police, emigration and propaganda.

Small octavo. Pages: xx + 257. Original black cloth decorated in orange. Orange dustwrapper. Eight illustrations in colour, sixty-five in half-tone, and map. Good copy, though foxed throughout, in good binding lightly worn at head and tale of spine and with a little spotting. Dustwrapper discoloured and with wear and loss at corners and head and tail of spine.

Four 16mo letters, three of them of one page, and the other of two pages. In good condition, on lightly-aged paper. In a crabbed hand. One addressed to 'J T Smith Esqre | British Museum', and another to 'J T Smith Esqre | 22 Carmarthen Street | an answer'. Little more than short notes. In one letter to J. T. Smith she asks him for 'Mr Vance's address, for a married gentleman', in the other she tells him that 'Mrs Martin of Liverpool, whose intimate friends are yours also, [...] wishes to be indebted to your obliging attention'.

40pp., 8vo. Stapled in printed wraps with illustration on front cover. In fair condition, somewhat aged and worn. Hodgkin was known for his meticulous catalouging, and 500 items are described, by a range of authors, both prominent and obscure, ranging from Grace Aguilar to Mrs Mary Wood-Allen. There are sub-sections for Louisa May Alcott, Elizabeth Barrett Browning, Fanny Burney, Jane Welsh Carlyle, Eliza Cook, Marie Corelli, Maria S. Cummins, Lady Elizabeth Eastlake, Maria Edgeworth, George Elliot, Mrs.

2pp., 16mo. The last leaf of a letter. In fair condition, lightly aged. Begins with reference to the payment of a subscription to 'the Society'. Continues: 'You must indeed have enjoyed your tour in the Black Forest. We are hoping to go to the South of France next month for a few weeks as we have not ben a journey all this year. I hope you and Mrs. Hunt will give us the pleasure of seeing you here if ever you come to Bath. My sister joins me in kindest regards'.

An anonymous document, clearly the work of a member of the British Parliament. Typescript of 12pp., folio. With retrospective title page in neat manuscript, reading: 'Skeleton Draft of a Bill prepared in August 1914. | How many troubles and disasters might have been saved if some such scheme had been carried out.' A few minor emendations in the same hand. On 'British Loan' Britannia wove paper. In good condition, with light signs of age and wear.

Pamphlet, 16pp., 8vo, lacking wraps, removed from volume of miscellaneous pamphlets, first leaf detached, spine showing evidence of removal and previous sewing and glueing (some damage etc), minor defects. Scarce.

Both letters 2pp., 12mo. Both in good condition, lightly-aged, the second with the first page lightly crossed through in pencil. The letters relate to work done for the firm of her brother-in-law Marcus Adams (described in his Times obituary as 'the outstanding child photographer of his day and photographer to the Royal Family for more than 30 years'), at 43 Dover Street, Mayfair. She begins the first letter by explaining that she has 'endeavoured to make the Woodall miniature like the snapshot, but unless they are really satisfied I had better do another.

One page, 12mo, bifolium, vestiges of glue from laying down, fold marks, good condition, text ("lithographed" is pencilled on the recto of the second leaf) clear and complete: "Ladies Committee for the Address from Women of Great Britain & Ireland to the Women of the United States on Slavery. [...] Sir | I beg to forward the enclosed papers for publication in your journal.

One page, 12mo, good condition. She thanks him for the trouble he's taken over the "Teddy Bear material". Some items sent ('patterns'?) are the cheapest found so far.

Containing: list of officers (pp.3-4) 'Rules' (p.5), 'Annual Report' (pp.6-18), 'Donations and Subscriptions' (pp.19-22, headed by 'Her Majesty the Queen' with a £50 donation and ten guinea subscription), list of 'Life Members or Donors of £5 and upwards' (pp.23-28), and 'Cash Account, March 25th, 1878' by the auditor Joseph Biggs (p.29). Topics in the report include 'Plan Tracing Office, | 42, Queen Anne's Gate', 'China Painting', 'Engraving on Wood', 'Clerks and Book-Keepers' and 'Commercial School for Girls, | 41, Regent Square'.

1p., 12mo. On aged and worn paper, with two punch holes at head. The letter is written to enclose particulars (not present) 'relating to the Chelsea Hospital for Women', in which Cadogan takes 'a deep interest'. He hopes Tuck 'may be induced to become one of its supporters, as it is urgently in need of increased assistance'. The Hospital's secretary will acknowledge all contributions on Cadogan's behalf.

All three items in good condition, on lightly aged paper. ONE: 4 December 1821. 3pp., 12mo. Bifolium. The letter, which concerns her plans for a book, begins: 'My dear Sir | In consequence of your opinion, I send a prospectus for Mr. Dawes [the critic Manassah Dawes (d.1829)?], which you will have the goodness to forward at a proper opportunity. But for this opinion, I should not have had the courage to apply to him, though the refusal of two persons ought not to prevent the application to a third. Nothing in my opinion could have been more certain than the subscriptions of Mr.

Four charming and amusing cartoons from Punch's golden age. All four are executed in a similar style, but the identity of the cartoonist or cartoonists is unknown. (The first of the two cartoons in Item Two below, as published by Punch, has the monogram signature 'F C' engraved in the bottom right-hand corner. No Punch cartoonist with these initials is apparent.) ONE: Captioned: 'Another Brilliant Idea, Only Brillianter!' 21 x 13.5cm. In good condition, on leaf of browned high-acidity paper torn from a notebook. Two men idle in a punt while two women hold up sheets.

2pp., 8vo. Handbill. In fair condition, on aged, creased and worn paper. Shelfmarks (of the Board of Education Reference Library, London). Discussing the proposals: 'Differentiation on Account of Sex', 'Differentiation on Account of the Age of Pupils', 'Differentiation on Account of Area' and 'Allowances over and above Scale Salary'. Scarce: no copy on OCLC WorldCat or on COPAC.

4pp., 8vo. In grey-green printed wraps. In good condition, on aged paper, with rusted staples. Shelfmark, stamp and label of the Board of Education Reference Library. The pamphlet can be roughly dated from the fact that Michael E. Sadler is named as Vice-Chancellor, a post he occupied between 1911 and 1923. No copy on COPAC.

With nine full-page photographic views ('Cherwell Hall - South East View', 'The Gateway', 'Cherwell Hall - The South Lawn', 'Porch at Front Door', 'The Entrance Hall', 'The Library, Cherwell Hall', 'The Iris Walk', 'A View in the Grounds, Cherwell Hall, showing Magdalen Tower', 'Cherwell Hall, The Oak Room'). In cream wraps printed in green. In good condition, on lightly-aged paper. Shelfmark, stamp and label of the Board of Education Reference Library. Can be roughly dated from the fact of the College's principal being Catherine I.

The two documents are on 33 x 24 cm pieces of vellum, and are pinned together. Both in very good condition. Both are printed forms, made out by the signatory. Bramwell's certificate begins (with the manuscript portions in square brackets): 'These are to Certify that on the [Twenty eighth] day of [March] in the year one thousand eight hundred and sixty-[one] before me the undersigned [Sir George William Wilshere Bramwell Knight one of the Barons of Her Majestys Court of Exchequer] Appeared personally [Catherine Stein] the Wife of [Peter Stein] and produced a certain Indenture marked [A]'.

[title continued] "!To which is added the Registration of Births and Deaths | The Whole including Marriage | Breach of Promise | Husband and Wife | Settlements | Parent and Child | Registration." pp.iv.188 (additional 3 pages of advts, inc.inside back cover), limp cloth binding, attractive cover with some use of colour (see scan), covers stained, contents good. A surprisingly scarce book, only two copies listed on COPAC (Oxford and Cambridge).

2pp., 12mo. Bifolium. In fair condition, on lightly aged and worn paper. Not having had 'la facilté de profiter de la bonne recommendation de Miss Louisa Hardy', she writes a letter of recommendation for her son, who will be passing through London for a few days: 'c'est lui qui vous portera nos compliments et vous remercira des articles des journaux que vous m'avez fait parvenir et qu'il m'a traduit'.

Both items in poor condition, with burn marks and damp damage [fire damaged much of the Society's archive]. Some of the text of the autograph letter has faded, and it may be that the signature to the typed note has washed away. Autograph Letter Signed: 2pp., 4to. He begins by offering to 'oppose anybody' in a debate that Mrs Roscoe is organising (at the Society of Women Journalists).

2pp., 12mo. The final leaf of the letter only. In good condition, on lightly-aged paper. A poignant letter, given its author's early death. Regarding 'the Shelter' Mackirdy writes that 'Lady Brassey the Duchess of St Albans Lady Radnor & others have been giving big dinner parties etc for me & I only go in order to meet people who will help with the Shelter. I am not very strong and have such heavy work that now I find I simply cannot indulge my own tastes & enjoy my firends if I am going to do definite work.

On one side of a piece of 11 x 11 cm paper, cut from the bottom of a letter. In good condition, lightly-aged. Reads, all in Kennedy's hand: 'Yours sincerely | Margaret Kennedy'.
