Addressed to ‘Dear Sir Edwin’ and signed ‘F D Lugard’. He regrets to inform him that there is ‘no present vacancy in Northern Nigeria’, but that he has ‘written to the c.o. on behalf of Mr Trayler whom you recommend, & I hope he may obtain an appointment in another Colony if no vacancy occurs in N. Nigeria’. He remembers ‘very well indeed’ their conversation ‘regarding Mount Edwin Arnold, [between Victoria and Albert Nyanza, and subsequently named Lobaba] & also several other occasions after which I had the honour & pleasure of meeting you some years ago’.
