English actor, playwright, songwriter (1856-1914). One page, 8vo. "Sir Maple is a handy man / And comfort round him spreads, / He furnishes on every plan / And also makes the beds." In bad condition, torn and holed by removal from mount, traces of which are glued to the reverse.

Miscellaneous writer and inventor ( (1810-1889). One page, 8vo. Text as follows: "O glorious sea of mountains in a storm,/ &c &c/ Martin F. Tupper:/ for the Revd James Newman's Church Bazaar./ 1858 Brecon."

Typescript, 12pp., 4to, cover/title spotted, contents good.

Scottish novelist (1800-1864). One page, 8vo, good. She quotes Shakespeare’s “What’s in a name?” and appends hersignature.

Editor of "Diplomata", antiquary (DNB). Sixteen lines on one page, small folio, some damage, but text complete and clear. Not signed.

Prince related to Victoria (DNB). Piece of paper, c.6 x 4", sl. soiled but clear, missing top left corner (and a word or two), text as follows: " . . . [end of word] 13123 / [P]lease give the Bearer 2 Gal: Brandy No. 2. at 24/6 the Gal: --- / Gleichen/ St James Palace / March 29/83/ The Secretary / A & N. Co:Op: Socty"

Dodington, George Bubb, Baron Melcombe 1691-1762, a Lord of the Treasury, Pope's "Bufo". One page, folio, fold mark, tear, loss of text (including the full signatures formerly below Dodington's), rest of official countersigning, etc. surviving. An order (8 March 1736) to pay £300 from His Majesty's treasure to John, Duke of Montagu (see DNB) "for one quarter of a year due at Christmas 1736 on his Annuity or yearly Pension of One Thousand two hundred pounds . . ."

Paper, c.6.5 x 4.5", fold mark, some foxing, but image bold and clear of people on the sea-front pulling and pushing an invalid chair against a fierce gale which has caught an umbrella, a fish, a handbill, etc. The sub-title reads "I [underlined] got a nice little airing! / Yours ever / GAB."

Envelope, c. 4.5 x 3.5", foxed with small tears, but address, in pencil, clear,in Kropotkin's hand as follows: Peter Kropotkin / Viola / Bromley // Kent".

Revolutionary patriot, Continental Congressman and lawyer, Rhode Island (1741-1796). Two pages, 4to, damaged and soiled but text clear and complete. Summary in different hand "1784 / Case to answer in the Estate of Joseph Warton Esq., by Henry Marchant on Ist Decr. 1784" [Warton was Colonial Governor of Rhode Island.] Marchant states the problem relating to the liabilities of Warton's widow and gives his opinion as to the circumstancers in which she was answerable to the liabilities and claims.

Divine and theological writer (1715-1792). A printed form, one page, some damage incl.

French politician and historian (1811-1882). Poor condition, complete text:. "Mille remerciement de la part de Mr Louis Blanc. Il reviendra. --- I.e. he was in exile or about to go into exile.

The address panel only, 4 x 2", of a letter with the address "Mrs Davidson/ Milner's[?] Lodgings/ Green Street/ Scarborough/ Yorkshire" in Mitford's hand. Partly laid down. Mary Mitford's name and address are written in another hand on the reverse.

Manuscript, 34pp., folio, bound in vellum, poor condition but complete. A Book of all ye names of the Severall Inhabitants & others residing in Strand Ward in the parish of St Martin in the Fields in the County of Middx for one year free Collection from Christmas 1729 by Quarterly payments or otherwise for the gratifying and paying the Reverend Mr.

One page, 12mo. On recto: "<...> 1797 of John Meheux the sum <...> / <... f>orty five Pounds for one <...> / me as one of the Commissioners <...> / <...> from Michaelmas to <...> / [signed] Hawkesbury". Docketted in pencil and in ink. On verso: "25 Decr. 1797 / The Rt Honble Lord Hawkesbury Commissioner 3/m Salary to 25th inst / £375: 0: 0". Some discolouration to paper.

Agreement "to be associated in the exploitation of the said Play", 4pp., folio, manuscript correctionsand additions initialled throughout by the above parties, and finally signed by both. WITH: Typed copy of the agreemen,t5 May 1944, between Agatha Mallowan (Christie) and Bertie Alexander Meyer for the rights to produce a play, 4pp., folio, NOT signed; AND: Typed copy of agreement, 30 Sept. 1942, between the same parties for the rights to "Ten Little Niggers", 4pp., folio, some pencilled annotation, NOT signed; AND: Typed copy agreement, 9 Sept.

Stopes has written lines headed "Marriage" on a 4to page (her birthday, 15 October) extracted from "A Birthday Book designed by her Royal Highness the Princess Beatrice" (1881). The book comprises one day to every page. The book has the bookplate of N. Hardy Wallis (see BLC). Stopes says "Marriage:-/ A stream of sweet content whereon do float/The jewelled flowers of passion to the sea / Of deep and everlasting memory./ Marie C. Stopes.

Judge (1725-1807). "<...> John Jaggers / John Holmes / James Graham / John Watkins / Given under my hand this 20th. day of March 1784 pursuant to the Statute in that Case made and provided. / [signed] W H Ashhurst". The DNB gives both spellings of the surname. Paper slightly discoloured.

Philanthropist and author (of the Life of Octavia Hill). One page taken from an album. On the page for his birthday (29 June) Maurice has written out part of Tennyson's "Oenone" (commencing "Self-reverence, self-knowledge, self-control"). Maurice involved himself in many causes, including the preservation of Parliament Hill Fields, Bulgaria when devastated, Boer women and children, Georgian independence, etc., etc. (With offprint of his obituary from the Ham and High.)

Irish historian and political writer (1829-1899). One page, 8vo. Signed by Thomas Macknight. Ingrams (Bentley Archives) lists a few items by him (BL).

one page, fol. He refers to a "Return of the Field and Garrison ordnance, with the ammunition for guns, howitzers . . ." which he has sent for the defence of North Britain.

Children's writer. One page, sm. fol. Vestiges of hinges. Signed and dated by Fyleman. The Poems written in Fyleman's hand are: "I stood against the window" (2 verses, total 16 lines; and "Have you watched the Fairies?", 3 verses, total 9 lines.

Summons on the command of the King to a meeting of the Knights of the Garter the following day.

Additions and corrections, some staining not obscurring the text. It commences "The Noblemen and Gentlemen whose names are undersigned", going on to describe Canning's role in estblishing peace and the "dignity and safety of the Empire" and popular desire for recognition of his work and a monument. He leaves a space for "Signatures" and lists the Banks where donations might be places.

Wit and politician. One page, fol., damp-staining and other damage marginally affecting the text. He acknowledges the receipt of £122.7.5 from Philip, Earl of Hardwicke, "one of the four tellers of the Receipt of His Majesty's Exchequer" (of a total of £40,000 in a Treasury Order "for the Service of His Majesty's Works"). Witnessed by Gabriel Mathias.

Scottish novelist (1800-1864). One page, trimmed, removed from an album, 7 x 4.5", text cldear and apparently complete, as follows: "Lines on the death of a Christian Hero.- // Let not a tear upon his grave be shed / The common tribute to the common dead, / But let the good, the [?], & the brave, / With noble envy sigh for such a grave / Catherine Sinclair / 28 Novr- / 1857". From the album formed by Annie, David Brewster's (see DNB) daughter-in-law. Brewster helped her with donations.
