8vo, ii + 29 pp. In original printed wraps. Text clear and complete. On aged and lightly-creased paper, with rusty staples, and wraps detached and repaired internally along spine. Wraps worn and discoloured. Ownership signature at head of front wrap.A little ink underlining, with occasional exclamation marks in margins and one 'Bah!' Motto reads 'The Scribes and Pharisees sit in Moses' seat.' First paragraph: '(The following is the latter part of a letter sent to the Education Committee for Newcastle-on-Tyne by James Philpott, a class teacher in the employ of that Committee. After reference made to the utterances of certain of the Committee's officials, the letter proceeds as follows): -'. Energetically written from a highly unorthodox point of view, anticipating in a more extreme form that of A. S. Neil, and summed up in Philpott's conclusion: 'The bubble will burst as it has burst before. Compulsory education and the state school will be shown to be the frauds they really are.' Concluding 32-line 4-stanza poem by Philpott, entitled 'The Scholar', beginning 'Caught early and crammed in a classroom'. Scarce: no copy at the British Library, and the only copy on COPAC at the London School of Economics. Philpott's only other publication was 'The Scholar-Citizen' (London: Simpkin, Marshall & Co., 1907).
