[ Prince Alexander of Battenberg [later Mountbatten]] Autograph Letter Signed Alexander of Battenberg to Col Oxley about his stay in Egypt (1915).
Two pages, 8vo, bifolium, some staining but text clear and complete. We are just off, and I want before leaving to thank you from myself and my brother for all your kindness to us during our stay in Cairo. | I can't tell you how much I enjoyed our cheery evening on Saturday. | There are great crowds going up to Khartoum this evening but Major Stock has fixed up everything for us. I am only too sorry that we shall not have the pleasure of finding you all at the [Kasr-el Nil? Qasr?] on our return, so must [underlined] look forward to meeting at home. Note: Alexander of Battenberg, also known as Alexander I of Bulgaria, was not primarily associated with Cairo. While he did serve as Prince of Bulgaria, he was also a British staff officer in Cairo during World War I. Specifically, he was a member of Lieutenant-General Sir John Maxwell's headquarters staff in Egypt in 1915. He is later known as Alexander Mountbatten, 1st Marquess of Carisbrooke [Wikipedia].
